24 Seniors Receive President’s Award for Educational Excellence
The President’s Award for Educational Excellence is an honorary award presented to seniors who meet the following criteria: they must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better and tests at the 85th percentile or above on either the ACT (which is a 28) or the SAT (which is a 1310). These students must demonstrate high motivation, initiative, integrity, intellectual depth, leadership qualities, judgement, involvement in community service, extra-curricular activities. Alum Knight Class of 2017
Of the 56 graduates, Fifteen boys or 27% of this class was offered 24 full tuition scholarships. Two-thirds of the boys will be using scholarship money for the institution they will be attending which is more than $2 million.
The Class of 2017 has earned over $6.8 million in scholarship offers.
The Class of 2017 was accepted to 91 colleges in 29 states and countries on three different continents. They will be attending 30 colleges in 15 different states on 3 continents; with 47% going out-of-state and 39% to private colleges. Twenty-eight boys will be attending six different colleges in Nebraska.

At weekly chapel, on Monday of last week, 4 candidates each gave short talks to the student body outlining their hopes and goals for next year. The other three candidates were Garrett Gloeb, Andrew Nigro, and Dash Wedergren. The election was held during classes last week.
Before becoming a Knight, Armel attended Saint Coumbkille Catholic Grade School in Papillion, Nebraska. Armel is the son of of Afi Eugenie Adokpe of LaVista.

As Oblates these young men dedicate themselves in a special way to live as balanced Christian people, offering witness to the world of Christ's transformative power. What sets them apart from other devoted Christian people is their special way of living out an enriched Christian life, according to the Gospel as reflected in the Rule of St. Benedict.

EngelKamp, '11 Wins National Employee Benefits Writing Competition
Mount Michael Alum Alex Engelkamp, ’11, won the 2017 Sidney M. Perlstadt Memorial Award in the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel’s Thirteenth Annual Employee Benefits Writing Competition. Engelkamp’s winning submission was entitled “Approaching Paid Sick Leave: Compliance or Preemption?”
He will receive the award at the Counsel’s annual black tie induction dinner on Saturday, October 14, 2017 in San Francisco, Cal.

Opening of School Mass & Picnic
A large crowd gathered Sunday afternoon for the opening of school Mass and picnic. Signup sheets, family photos, and stories of summer filled the air with enthusiasm. The Booster Club sponsored the picnic providing delicious fried chicken.
At Mass, Bro. August's homilyreflected on David "D.J. Sokol and living the call to holiness.
Freshmen and new students had orientation afterwards. The Freshmen continue orientation on Monday and are dismissed at 3:24 like a regular school day. They will return to campus for the first day of classes that begins on Thursday.

Knights take time out to watch eclipse
Everyone at the Mount took time off for an outdoor lunch today to enjoy the Eclipse. At its peak the eclipse triggered some of the street lights to turn on. The full effect is not noticeable in photos because the darker it got the more the lens opened for proper exposure. The lighting did get pretty weird though in person. View More Photos

Students from The Mount's Cyber Security Class and IT Club visit the FBI Office in Omaha. |
Dr. Rzemyk took students from Mount Michael for a tour of the FBI Cyber Crime and Research Lab in Omaha, NE at the Scott Data Center. They were able to meet several FBI field intelligence agents, cyber analysts, investigators, and tactical agents that are part of the cyber task force.
The tour is a part of the new cyber security class and after school IT club. It allows students to network and meet public and private professionals in the field. (Photos were not permitted on the inside of the research facility)

3 Knights Named National Merit Semi-Finalists; 1 Commended Student
Mount Michael is please to announce that three seniors have been named National Merit Semi-Finalists. They are Garrett Gloeb, Nolan Huetter, and Matthew Thiele. In addition Dash Wedergren was noted as a National Merit Commended Student.

About 1.6 million juniors in more than 22,000 high schools entered the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) Out of that number approximately 16,000 students qualified as Semifinalists for the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring. Scholarship winners will be announced in the Spring.
Garrett Gloeb is the son of Matt and Kristin Gloeb of Bennington, Nebraska. Garrett attended St. Vincent de Paul Grade School in Omaha.
Nolan Huetter is the son of Kurt and Liz Huetter of Omaha, Nebraska. Nolan attended St. Patrick's Grade School in Elkhorn.
Matthew Thiele is the nephew of Bob and Betty Knapp of Omaha. Matthew had attend St. Gerald's Grade School in Ralston, Nebraska
Dash Wedergren is the son of Scott and Shelley Wedergren of Elkhorn, Nebraska. Dash attended Elkhorn Ridge Middle School in Elkhorn.
